WHAT’S INVOLVED

To get started, purchase an STEM Racing Entry/Development Class Starter Kit, available individually or in packs of five. This contains wheels, axles, and model blocks.

DESIGN: Providing a brilliant introduction to basic CAD skills, teams can use the intuitive Autodesk Fusion 360 – provided free to all students – to

design their car’s body and wings.

ANALYSE: Introducing CFD software, students receive free access to Ansys products and learning resources, which enable them to explore the use of data analysis for design optimisation.

MAKE: With three manufacturing options allowed, teams can choose to hand carve, 3D print, or CNC machine their car body!

TEST: Virtual tests can be ran using Ansys CFD software, assessing the impact of different air flows, and more. But the best test is on the track!

RACE: At competition, cars are raced on a 20-metre elevated racetrack, powered by 8 gram cannisters of compressed air.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT: A guide is provided to all students for independent learning.

THE REQUIREMENTS

When competing in an STEM RACING event, teams will be assessed on:

DESIGN & ENGINEERING PORTFOLIO: A five-page document which discusses a number of elements, including initial ideas and inclusion of 3D sketches.

VERBAL PRESENTATION: Lasting five minutes, this should include a number of key areas, including learning experiences and evidence of collaboration.

SCRUTINEERING: The technical regulations provide students with a range of challenges relating to dimensions, weight, size, and compliance with a ‘no go’ area.

RESARCH MISSION: At the event, teams are given a challenge which encourages research and reflection.
